The birthstone for February is amethyst, the stone of Saint Valentine, who wore an amethyst engraved with the image of cupid. The word amethyst comes from the Greek word amethystos, meaning “not to intoxicate.” It was believed that an amethyst could prevent drunkeness. Being a purple stone, it represents royalty and power. Amethyst is the traditional stone for the sixth wedding anniversary.
