The birthstone for May is the deep green variety of the beryl species. Beryl comes in many colors, but emerald is the most precious. Its name comes from Greek smaragdos, meaning “green stone.” The finest emeralds are transparent, but many are clouded by inclusions that help identify them as genuine. These inclusions can be referred to as jardin, which is French for “garden.”
